What is Behavior Therapy?
Shaping appropriate behavior is critical to your child’s success.
There are some situations when one-on-one therapy alone may be sufficient in replacing unwanted behaviors with more acceptable ones. Other situations may be more complex, requiring training for all people in the child’s support system. The approach at Precision Parenting is flexible and capable of being adapted to the needs of the child, family and support system as required by each unique situation.
T.I.M.E., a proprietary tool developed by Precision Parenting, is used in Behavior Therapy to address behaviors identified by parents as most disruptive to child and family. Systematically, T.I.M.E. seeks to:
- Target (Identify and prioritize challenging behaviors)
- Intervene (Teach pro-social replacement behaviors to the child/family)
- Measure (Collect data on current target behavior)
- Evaluate (Based on data analysis, determine if behavior change has occurred)
For many families, one-on-one behavior therapy for their child is a necessary component of the overall support plan. While parent and family training are essential for behavior change, some children require one-on-one support to learn and strengthen skills surrounding:
Rigidity and inflexible thinking
Disrespectful language and backtalk
The Precision Parenting process involves identifying: the function of your child’s behavior, lagging skills contributing to the behavior and strategies and techniques to teach more appropriate replacements.
